Client Background and Needs

For a long time, the external hard drive market had shown little variation in appearance design, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between products. As a brand committed to innovation and design leadership, Japan’s I-O DATA aimed to highlight product value through differentiated appearance design and invited Magnus to participate in the engineering development of this innovative hardware.

Magnus Solution

Magnus worked closely with I-O DATA’s engineering team to redesign the upper and lower covers, achieving a balance of aesthetics and functionality:

● Introduced TOM (Three Dimension Overlay) technology, commonly used in automotive dashboards, providing a three-dimensional texture and scratch resistance.
● Recommended the use of a specified film for the upper cover to achieve a refined finish.
● Designed the lower cover with dual-material construction, allowing internal lighting to pass through the housing while using an outer rubber coating for a soft and comfortable grip.

All materials were thoroughly researched and tested, meeting both product design and manufacturing requirements for strength and aesthetics, and successfully passing Japan’s VCCI certification.

Project Outcome

With Magnus’s optimized engineering design, the project successfully delivered a stylish and high-performance portable hard drive that is easy to carry and ideal for sharing data at home or among friends. Through this collaboration, Magnus not only contributed to structural optimization but also brought a fresh new look to I-O DATA’s product line. This case highlights our professional expertise in ODM manufacturing, achieving a seamless integration of design and engineering.
